Artist's Statement
The natural world is a feast for all senses, but the visual reaches out to me and demands that its essence be captured on canvas.
Asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, "an artist", was always my answer. Not surprisingly art became my major in college, leading to a career teaching my favorite subject. I found my love of art shared by many young children. Through the years I worked along with them in a a variety of media.
Now as a painter and mixed media artist, I spend many happy hours each day working in my studio. My focus has been on landscape and nature. I was influenced by living in Japan, copious travel, a summer of plein-air painting in Provence, and living on an incredibly beautiful water front and wooded property in Virginia.
A recent move from the East Coast to Arizona has given me a wealth of artistic stimulation and new ideas. THere are not enough hours in the day to create all that is in my mind.
My work is an ever changing process. I want to capture a moment in time, not a literal copy, to get the sensory feel of the place, the thing, the moment. I paint things that speak to me..straw stacks in the sunset, charcoal skies above golden trees, patterns in the water. Each has a place in the world. Each is a beautiful tale of life.
Most recently, my work has evolved to non-objective expressions. Who knows what I will do next, but I am enjoying the continuing evolution .
